BreezeBrowser's Combined Raw Conversion

BreezeBrowser's combined raw conversion option for Canon cameras uses sophisticated image processing techniques to combine the best features of normal conversion and linear conversion. This results in images with excellent color and improved highlight detail.

Background
Canon's raw conversion routines have the option of using normal conversion or linear conversion. Normal conversion has the advantage of producing images with good colors which are ready for printing or web display with little or no post processing. One of the problems with normal conversion is the Canon routines have a tendency to clip the highlights resulting in loss of detail in these areas.

Linear conversion converts the image with minimal additional processing. This has the advantage of giving access to the full dynamic range captured by the image sensor. However, images converted using linear conversion require extensive post processing in order to produce usable images. Even with the use of powerful image editors like Photoshop it can be difficult to match the colors obtained using normal conversion.

BreezeBrowser's combined raw conversion works by converting the image twice: once using normal conversion and once using linear conversion. The two images are then analyzed and merged together to give a single image which combines the excellent colors of normal conversion with the improved highlight detail of linear conversion.

When should it be used?
BreezeBrowser's combined raw conversion is most effective on images with bright highlights. It has little or no effect on darker or under exposed images. There is no magic method that will produce perfect results from every image and occasionally the results using normal conversion are more pleasing.

Combined conversion is available for the following Canon cameras: EOS D30, D60, 300D/Digital Rebel, 10D and PowerShot S30, S40, S45, S50, S60, G2, G3, G4, Pro1. It is also not available for Canon EOS 1D and 1Ds raw files because the Canon normal conversion routines retain more highlight detail than for other cameras and there is little to be gained.
